These are a stunning pair of hand-carved bookends by Canadian folk artist, Andre Boucher. They are original and signed with his name on the right bookend. The bottoms are covered in felt. This pair is two older men with hats, mustaches and bears and are loving made in the folk art tradition.
In wonderful condition with no chips, cracks or discoloring. A unique pair that is sure to be a conversation starter.
André Boucher was a Canadian folk artist, specifically a flat-plane woodcarver from Quebec, active in the 1970s. He is known for intricate, painted relief carvings and souvenir-style pieces, often depicting figures and scenes from Canadian life. His work includes relief carvings of subjects like blacksmiths, fishermen, and those involved in collecting maple sap.
His art often depicts traditional figures. Examples include a fisherman with a pipe, a blacksmith making horseshoes, and people collecting maple sap.
Boucher received his training at Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, a region in Quebec known for its woodcarving tradition. His work is primarily associated with the 1970s.
Each one measures approximately 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" wide and a little over 3 1/2" from front to back.
